North Irish Roots to go on-line
The Society has signed a contract with JSTOR to digitise North Irish Roots and make it available on the web.
JSTOR (Journal STORage) started as a pilot project in the United States, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in1995. The aim was to provide a solution to the increasing costs to libraries of storing back runs of journals. The project proved so successful that a full service was launched in January 1997 in the US. JSTOR is now an independent, non-profit making organisation.
JSTOR is now working with Q.U.B. to create an Ireland Collection of 100 journals, 250 monographs and 2,500 pages of manuscripts; this will include all back numbers and all future issues of North Irish Roots. With North Irish Roots online, our Society will attract more attention internationally and will benefit from the revenue. Members of the Society will, in due course, be able to gain free access to the Irish Collection through the NIFHS website.
