The information presented is in the form of keywords names, location, subjects, and access to the newspapers is required to make best use of this resource. The Federation for Ulster Local Studies - FULS was established in 1974 as the representative body for voluntary local history societies in Ulster. The Federation publishes a journal, Due North, twice each year. More details of the work of FULS can be found on their website at www.fuls.org.uk. S.
The General Register Office (Northern Ireland) - GRONI is responsible for the administration of marriage law and the provision of a system for the civil registration of births, deaths, marriages and adoptions in Northern Ireland. Copies of Birth, Marriage and Death certificates can be obtained online. Their site can be found at www.groni.gov.uk. S. C.
The Public Record Office for Northern Ireland - PRONI has the remit to acquire, preserve and make available to the public, records of historical interest relating to Northern Ireland. PRONI has the legal responsibility for the selection and preservation of all public records in Northern Ireland, it also acts as an archive for private papers. The site has a number of databases; one listing freeholders at www.proni.gov.uk/freeholders/intro.asp and covering a period from 1700-1840, another listing the signatures of persons who signed up to the Ulster Covenant and Ulster Declaration in 1912 at www.proni.gov.uk/ulstercovenant/index.html. It launched it's new website on the 10th January. A new feature of the site is the online index to the Wills and Letters of Administration index from 1858 to c1900, which will eventually be linked to digitised copies of the original documents. Ulster Ancestry have made Griffith's Valuation for the nine Ulster counties available on-line at www.ulsterancestry.com/search.html. The Dictionary of Ulster Biography was published in 1993 by Kate Newmann. The Dictionary is a natural database for the work of the The Ulster History Circle and it has, with the author's and publisher's permission, been placed on the internet as a resource to the Circle and also to those interested in local and regional history and biography. The Ulster Historical Foundation - UHF caters for those interested in local and family history. The Foundation publishes books, two annual publications Familia and the Directory of Irish Family History Research. Co Armagh
Armagh Ancestry have been compiling genealogical records from church and state records for a number of years as part of the Irish Family History Foundation Project. As a consequence of the project some 500,000 records are now available to search online. You have to register to search the site, you can search for free but to view the records costs £7.00 per record. Over the next 18 months the IFHF hope to bring all the remaining Irish county databases online with a combined dataset of 40 million records. The website can be viewed at armagh.brsgenealogy.com. C.

The first and second Markethill Presbyterian Churches have combined to produce an attractive website, of particular interest to genealogists is the genealogy page which lists baptism and marriage records from 1821 to 1945 and a list of the members of the Congregation dating back to 1763. Postman Bill is a new website detailing research into the family background of William MARTIN, a postman from Derry City, N. The Irish Family History Foundation website. The Foundation is the co-ordinating body for a network of government approved genealogical research centres in the Republic of Ireland (Eire) and in Northern Ireland which have computerised tens of millions of Irish ancestral records of different types. You will find information here about the Irish Family History Foundation centre for each county. An interactive map is available at ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/map.php which gives details of those areas whose records are currently available. C.
The Ireland GenWeb Project has been working on getting the 1864 Ireland Birth Index online. Currently only the surnames beginning with A have been completed, these can be found at: www.irelandgenweb.com/BirthIndex/BirthIndex1864-A.htm.
Irish Historical Maps. This site was produced by the Ordinance Survey of Ireland. It gives on-line access to highly detailed pre and post-Famine maps of Ireland from the mid 1800s. When completed it will cover the period right up to 1913. These maps can be viewed on-line, selected sections can be downloaded and full maps ordered. There is a charge for browsing the maps starting at 5 euros per day and the area covered does not include Northern Ireland. The step-by-step guide gives clear instructions for use of the site. The Irish Mariners website contains an index of Irish born merchant seamen contained in the CR10 series of index cards in the Southampton Civic Archives. The archive holds 270,000 cards covering the multinational workforce of the British Merchant Marine during the period from late 1918 to the end of 1921. All ranks and jobs at sea are covered from master to scullion. A unique feature of the cards is that they usually contain a good photograph of the seaman. There are currently 16,000 records online with surnames completed up to L. The next update is planned for 1st September. The website acts primarily as an index with sample photographs, copies of the originals have to be obtained from Southampton Civic Archives. The website can be found at www.irishmariners.ie/
The Irish Newspaper Archives provides online access to a growing number of local papers mainly based in the Republic. Perhaps of most interest to genealogists is the Freeman's Journal running from 1763-1924. Search results are presented in an impressive manner, an image of the printed paper page appears with the search term highlighted. Inevitably there is a charge for the service although you get 2 free credits when you register enabling you to look at 2 images. To view the site, click irishnewspaperarchives.com. C.
The The Irish Pension Search Engine. This site provides information arising from the introduction of The Old Age Pension Act in Ireland in 1908. Drawn from the 1841 and 1851 Irish census the database records the details of applicants for the pension and in many cases details of every person living in the household is supplied. The Irish Pension Records cover the northern counties of Ireland (including Donegal). Some 20,000 records are currently available. There is a charge of 1 euro per record downloaded. The Irish War Memorials site has a searchable database of names on memorials on the island of Ireland to all conflicts before 1969. The site contains photos of the memorials and text of the inscriptions. The site is free but the searches can be slow even with a broadband connection. The Library Ireland site is a sister site to Biblio Ireland and makes the text of out of print and copyright books available on the internet. The range of books includes many local history items and many of the town directories. The site can be viewed at www.libraryireland.com. S.
The Registry of Deeds Index Project is in the early stages of development. The purpose of this project is to index all of the names that appear in the memorial books at the registry of deeds. The Registry of Deeds is located in Henrietta Street, Dublin and is a reposity of records of wills, land transactions in Ireland and other deeds from 1709. Britain
Ancestry.co.uk is the 'local' branch of a major commercial genealogical information provider. The site can be viewed at www.ancestry.co.uk.C.
The British Emigration Records 1890-1960 held in the National Archives are being made available through their www.findmypast.com website. Currently only records for the first decade 1890-1899 are available, when completed it is estimated there will be records for some 30 million individuals. While there is a charge for viewing a transcript or image, the following information is available freely to help you identify the individual record; Surname, Forename, Sex, Year of Departure, Departure Port, Destination Country, Destination Port. Details of Royal Navy and Royal Marine casualty lists from pre 1914 to 2008 are now available at www.naval-history.net. These are listed both alphabetically and chronologically by ship. There is also considerable supporting information on battles, actions, convoys, warships, merchant ships and ship losses.
The Society of Genealogists offers a unique combination of research material, guidance and support for those interested in family history and the lives of earlier generations. Access Newspaper Obituaries and discover your genealogy online. Discover obituary resources like old newspaper obituaries archives and download free genealogy forms and printable family tree charts. The site is mainly North American and can be viewed at http://www.obituarieshelp.org.
Rootsweb is another big site and is sponsored by Ancestry.com. The site provides storage for family trees through its Worldconnect project and mailing lists and message boards. There are mailing lists and message boards for each county in Ireland, messages posted on a message board are forwarded to the appropriate mailing list. We Relate is the new kid on the block and is sponsored by The Foundation for On-Line Genealogy, Inc. in partnership with the Allen County Public Library, Indiana USA. It takes the 'wiki' concept and applies it to genealogy and is well worth a visit. The site can be viewed at www.werelate.org.
