"Archives Policy for NI Consultation Document"

Angela Smith, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for N.Ireland had launched a consultation document regarding the Archive Policy for Northern Ireland.   The full version of the document is available on the Department's website www.dcalni.gov.uk

Responses were due back by the end of January and we now await the outcome.

Belfast Branch latest project

Last year, the Belfast Branch launched their new project Lateral Links.  This was an experimental project to discover family links between members of the Society and last year contained information of over 1,000 names.

A copy was  issued to all Branches and our Library.

An addendum to this with approx 250 more names will be issued to the Branches shortly.

Unfortunately for security reasons, Lateral Links will not be available on the Internet.

National Archives Genealogy Service

The National Archives is delighted to announce the commencement of its Genealogy Service. This service is provided free of charge. Here you will meet professional genealogists who can advise and assist you in the
first steps towards researching your family history. The professional genealogists, as well as experienced National Archives staff in the Niall McCarthy Reading Room, will be delighted to assist you.

The Genealogy Service is available to the public from Monday to Friday, from 10.00 a.m. until 5.00 p.m. It is located on Floor 5 of the National Archives, close to the Readers’ Tickets Room and the Reading Room.

The Genealogy Service is intended primarily for first-time researchers and visitors. However, more experienced researchers are also welcome to use it. If you have already used the service, you are invited to use it
again if you feel that this might assist you in further research.

When assisting members of the public using the Genealogy Service in the National Archives, the professional genealogists providing the service are not permitted to offer directly their own services for paid
genealogical searching. They may indicate how paid genealogical searches may be commissioned, and may provide lists of suitably qualified genealogical searchers which may include their own name, but they are not permitted either to volunteer their own services or to encourage a member of the public to engage them in preference to anyone else on a list of searchers.

A similar Genealogy Service is provided in the National Library of Ireland. If you have already used the service in either the National Archives or the National Library, you are free to use the service in the other institution if you feel that this might assist you in your research.
