Shelfmarks and Shelfmark Listing
Shelfmarks
Each item in the Research Centre has a shelfmark/accession number in the format AA999-999, where AA is comprised of up to two alphabetical characters and indicates the section the item belongs to; the 999 in front of the dash represents either no or three numerical values which in turn indicate a subdivision of that section, which can be a periodical title, a series title, or a particular subject area. The 999 after the dash represents three numerical values that are the accession number indicating when the item was added to the Research Centre.
As you will see in the listings below not all shelfmarks use the full complement of available characters. Two examples of this are the birth indexes which have no alphabetical prefix and the special purchases sub division which comprises only the alphabetical prefix SP a dash and then the accession number.
