DNA Innovation, Education and Promotion

The Society is a strong advocate of DNA testing to enhance the study of family history with particular reference to those with ancestors in the North of Ireland.

DNA testing is becoming an increasingly important tool for genealogy and, combined with traditional methods of research, can help you to make your tree taller and wider. It can also verify your ancestral lines confirming that you are indeed descended from a certain ancestor.

Innovation

Our innovative DNA Projects are delving deeper into specified areas of research and getting results that would not have been possible using traditional research methods. Projects can immediately connect you to people with a similar research interest and that could provide you with valuable information.

Education

The Society provides educational courses throughout the year and these often include classes on specific aspects of DNA research.

The annual DNA Summer School is a week of DNA immersion, 2 classes per day over 5 days. It is an extremely popular event that attracts participants  from all over the world. Many of them book all 10 classes – impressive!!
Everyone involved in the delivery of Summer School generously volunteers their time and all the proceeds go towards funding ongoing DNA activity within the Society.
Presentations are usually recorded, so anyone booking a class gets access to the video for 28 days after the event. If you are in a different time zone, you can still watch the presentation or you just want a recap to make sure you didn’t miss anything.

Members of the Society will be notified of upcoming classes. If you are not a member, follow us on Facebook or keep an eye on our Courses Page.

Promotion

The more people that test their DNA, the more it helps everyone with their research. This all helps to unlock the story of the people of Ulster. For this reason, the DNA team actively promotes DNA testing and offers discounts on autosomal, Y and Mitochondrial tests throughout the year.
