Transfer your DNA

Transfer your DNA. More matches, more success!

You can only find DNA matches with people who are on the same site as you.

Make sure you have the best chance of capturing all interesting matches by uploading your DNA to different sites.

The first step is to download your DNA from the site you tested with and then upload it elsewhere. Ancestry, MyHeritage and 23andMe do not accept uploads so if you want to compare your DNA on those sites, you need to take one of their tests.

It is often free to upload your DNA to different sites but you may have to pay to access tools and/or information. These costs vary between sites so please check.

Important: You must ensure that you have permission before uploading the DNA of any person whose account you manage.

Each testing company uses different processes to analyse DNA and this can result in variations in results between the sites. For most people, this will not matter but some people delving deeper into segment matching may want more accuracy. Find out more in this video on our YouTube channel: Are Uploads Sufficient?

We do our best to keep the DNA transfer instructions up to date, but since websites may change their processes without notice, some information might occasionally be outdated.

North of Ireland DNA Project

Once you have results on Family Tree DNA you are welcome to join the North of Ireland DNA Project if you have ancestors from Ulster. To join the project log into your FTDNA account and, without logging out, navigate here.
Click on ‘Join’ to join our project, follow the instructions and we will approve you as soon as possible. Once approved you will be able to see who you match that also has Northern Irish ancestors and you will also be able to see and partake in our project message board.
