Writing Family Memoirs Course

Writing Family Memoirs that Engage and Inspire the Next Generation

A six part online course for NIFHS Members only.

Have you ever wondered how to transform your family history research into stories that your children, grandchildren, and wider family will want to read and preserve?

Join Audrey McKeown, Editor of North Irish Roots, for a practical and enjoyable course that will help you bring your family history to life through story-based writing.

What Will the Course Cover?

Family history is much more than names, dates, and records. This course explores ways to create engaging narratives that capture the personalities, experiences, and lives of our ancestors.

  • Move beyond family records and timelines.
  • Identify compelling stories within your research.
  • Develop a vivid character portrait of an ancestor.
  • Use historical context to enrich family narratives.
  • Write in a style that engages and inspires future generations.
  • Shape research findings into a meaningful family story or booklet.

Rather than attempting to write a complete family history, participants will focus on creating a Character Study—a narrative portrait of one ancestor that combines research, historical context, memories from family members, and storytelling techniques.

This is a supportive, hands-on course with opportunities to share ideas, discuss progress, and learn alongside fellow family historians.
