Beyond the Sea – Women Transported from Carrickfergus Gaol

Monthly Branch Meeting

Beyond the Sea – Women Transported from Carrickfergus Gaol, a talk by Helen Clarke.

In 2019 Carrickfergus and District Historical Society along with Carrickfergus Museum took part in the Women in the Archives programme run by the Linen Hall Library and the Public Records Office.  The project looked at women who had been held in Carrickfergus Gaol and enabled a great deal of information on the various aspects of the lives of the women in Carrickfergus gaol and indeed the gaol itself to be amassed.

One of the areas looked at was women who had been tried in Carrickfergus or held in Carrickfergus gaol during the 1840’s and who were ultimately transported to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania).  This talk looks at transportation at this time and a number of those who were transported.

These are real cases and part of the talk does include some information on the crimes committed – this information is taken from newspaper reports of the time.

Online. Branch members will receive the link by email in advance of each meeting – anyone else interested in attending can request the link from the Branch secretary using the button on the right.
