Researching Your Ancestors in the North of Ireland: Life in Ulster in the 1830s

The introduction puts the 1830s into its family history and historical context and discusses the excellent source materials for the period.

A dozen or so aspects of life are then considered, with examples drawn mainly from reasonably prosperous farming communities, e.g. health, education, housing, amusements, emigration and so on.

Finally other places, including a wealthier town and poorer parishes and other times, are discussed with suggestions for further reading matter.

Originally written to accompany a Society course with the same title, this booklet was developed to be useful to anyone, whether or not they had attended the course.

This Inch to the Mile map covers the area east and south of Belfast, with coverage stretching from Sydenham eastwards to Ballywalter (Portavogie is split by the east margin), and from Newtownards southwards to Saintfield.
