Articles, sources and a very good read!

The Society’s journal, North Irish Roots, is published twice a year in A5 hardcopy format. It is posted to current members at the time of despatch, usually in April and October. Joint members at the same address receive one copy between them.
First released in 1984 under the editorial guidance of the Rev. Herbert Kelso, the Journal is not only a valuable resource offering informative content, it is also an engaging and enjoyable read.
The articles, with contributions from the Society’s own members, key family history bodies and other contributors cover a wide range of family history subjects including key sources for genealogical research as well as family history articles on particular themes.
In 2022 a team of volunteers created a Guide to the Journals which allows Society members to search every journal from 1984 to 2021 by title, ancestral surname, church, townland or place (worldwide) to find articles that are of specific interest to their own areas of research. This large resource with over 260 pages, also contains 450 references for family history within its articles.
Members may then look up the article in the Research Centre, where there is a full library of back issues or they may find them online on JSTOR which includes most of the past issues of North Irish Roots up to 3 years ago.
JSTOR is a well regarded online archive of mainly academic journals, with some dating back to the 18th century. Members of the Society have free access to JSTOR’s full Ireland Collection.
Access to the Guide to the Journals and to JSTOR is available through the Members’ Area of our website.
